Lot Essay

Leonard Bramer was a Dutch painter and draftsman whose style was greatly influenced by the Caravaggesque artists, whose work he saw during his travels in Italy. He favored Italianate subjects, including mythological, allegorical, historical and biblical scenes, over the more traditionally Dutch still lifes, portraits and genre pieces - as exemplified by the present painting.

We would like to thank Prof. Frima Fox Hofrichter for her assistance in cataloguing this painting.
