Lot Essay

Jan Baptist van der Meiren was a painter of landscapes and battle scenes, who became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in Antwerp in 1685 and may have traveled to Italy and Vienna. He was known for small-scale landscape scenes of Italian markets and ports and for painting the staffage figures in the landscapes of Adriaen Frans Boudewyns. His paintings are in the collections of the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp and the Museés des Beaux Arts, Brussels.

We are grateful to Marijke de Kinkelder of the RKD for confirming the attribution of the present and following lots to van der Meiren (written communcation, 21 July 2006).
