A Japanese silver inlay export biscuit barrel, signed Masaharu, circa 1900
of cylindrical form, decorated in fine takazogan with silver, gilt and copper and with incised embellishment, depicting a continous scene of chrysanthemum, peony and smaller flowersprays surrounded by a variety of flying and crawling insects including bees crickets and butterflies, raised on a circular stand with four peony flowerhead supports, the hinged cover with finial modelled as a pair of quail upon rockwork - 8 1/8in. (20.7cm) high.
