Lot Essay

The present watch is a rather unusual and hardly known early example of reference 5513. In fact with the introduction of the 5512/13 family Rolex upgraded all its Submariner models with the functional crown guards. These shoulders are designed to protect the crown against impact which could later result in the loss of water-resistance.

The watch offered here is consequently an early 1960s hybrid with elements of the late 1950s "James Bond" series, such as the 5510, and the newly introduced 5512/13 generation, furthermore reflected by the "old-fashioned" straight bezel, more commonly associated with the 5508 style.
