Lot Essay

The title of this pastel is an extract from Robert Burns' 'The Cotter's Saturday Night', 1785. The poem tells the story of a hard-working labourer and his family. This present drawing depicts the moment that the suitor of the labourer's eldest daughter arrives to court her for the first time.
