Gunn was born in Glasgow in 1893. Between 1909 and 1912 he studied at Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. One of the 'Glasgow Boys', he is perhaps best known for his beach scenes painted largely on the Continent. It seems likely that the present drawing was executed after 1926 as in this year Gunn changed his signature from 'H.J. Gunn' to 'H. James Gunn'.
