Lot Essay
Cursiter, born in the Orkneys, set up his studio in Edinburgh and pursued his practice there as a portrait painter. In 1930 he was appointed Director of the National Gallery of Scotland where he had been a Keeper since 1924 and became Royal Limner in 1948. His life-long love of the Orkneys is evident in his paintings, he spent much time in the conservation of St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall.
