In the 1980s a group of Scottish figurative painters emerged who were known as the New Glasgow Boys, and Conroy played a significant part. He enjoyed recognition when his work was included in a group exhibition at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 1987 called The Vigorous Imagination, and since then has exhibited throughout Britain and overseas. His paintings echo the work of an earlier generation of Scottish figurative artists, such as James Cowie, who himself was also a student at the Glasgow School of Art.
