Lot Essay

Commissioned by Sonia Knips. The Knips family were loyal patrons of Hoffmann and close to the Secession movement from the outset. In 1889 Sonia Knips' portrait was painted by Klimt and was exhibited at the second Secessionist exhibition that year. In 1903 Hoffmann produced designs for the interior of Sonia Knips' apartment in the Gumpendorferstrasse, Vienna, undertaking subsequent work in 1909. Hoffmann's final commission for Knips was the design of a large town house in 1924-25.
