Lot Essay

Fred Uhlman became a self-taught artist after a brief career as a lawyer in his birthplace of Stuttgart, Germany. When Hitler was elected Chancellor in 1933 he fled to Paris, where he was recognized by the critic Wertheim. Uhlman settled in England, where he exhibited at leading London galleries such as the Zwemmer, Redfern, Lefevre and Browse & Delbanco.
