Lot Essay

Harold Wood was born in Preston, Lancashire, and he studied part-time at Harris Art School (1935-39) while also working in the decorative art department at Leyland Paint & Varnish. After six years' wartime service Wood worked in London as an illustrator and model maker. He started painting full time in 1955 and various commissions followed, including in 1974 a commission to illustrated the life of Abdul Aziz al Sauld, the first King of Saudi Arabia, for which Wood painted a total of 58 watercolours, completing the commission in 1977.
