Lot Essay

Odette Dumaret was taught by Suzanne Valadon (1867-1938), circus acrobat, artist's model, Renoir's mistress, Utrillo's mother and pupil of Edgar Degas. Reputabley her most talented student, her first observation of Dumaret was "you have a natural gift. I shall try to destroy it. Then we shall see what, if anything, is left". Dumaret's talent survived, and was confirmed by Valadon stating "yes, you are indeed one of us".
