Pinto states in his book "apart from paper, spills were made of either flat slithers of wood, or rolls of curled shavings. The flat slivers or 'spelk' were cut on a 'spelk plane', the same tool which was used for 'spelk' basket making. The tubular shaving spills were tightly and automatically curled as they passed through the special plane." Examples are illustrated in the book pl.116, fig.A-F.
