Lot Essay

Jon had seen an advertisement in the Antiques Trade Gazette newspaper for some treen coming up for sale at Heathcote Ball & Co., a Leicestershire auction house in May 1994. Swearing my son David and myself to secrecy, and booking a day off work (an unbelieveably unusual occurence for Jon), he arranged a 7am rendez-vous for departure to Leicester. Feeling very pleased with ourselves arrived at the auction at 9am, only to find England's two premier treen dealers had already completed their viewing! Our hearts sank.

However, after viewing, Jon determined to buy the York Tankard only (see lot 173). I threatened divorce if we didn't buy the pearwood goblet (lot 161), and the mufineer (see lot 70). We successfully bid for all three, and went home feeling guilty about securing the best three pieces at the sale. Mary Levi.
