THE PLACE DE L'OPERA, WATERCOLOUR AND GOUACHE, BY LUIGI LOIR
The three following watercolors (lots 12-14) were utilized as advertising postcards in the form of chromolithography for the department store 'Au Bon Marché' between 1895 and 1905 (see N. Willer, Luigi Loir, Peintre de la Belle Epoque à la Publicité, Catalogue raisonné-vol. 1, Carmel/Paris, pp. 149-150, ill.). These original drawings have the same dimensions as the postcards. Luigi Loir was a productive draughtsman in the advertising field, working for several editors and large companies, but he especially produced series of postcards for 'Au Bon Marché'.
