With circular red and grey marble top on a flared leaf column, the base with three addorsed dolphins, on a shell-carved and watery base, on bun feet, incized on the underside 'GB', previously with sunk casters

Lot Essay

The 'picturesque' nature of this table-frame relates in particular to a pattern for a Venus fountain 'torchere' or stand issued in Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed. 1762 (pl.71) This was reissued as part of the French fashion of the early l9th century.
