Lot Essay

Such large blue and white meiping are either decorated with phoenix or dragons. Jessica Harrison-Hall notes in Ming Ceramics that 'eight blue and white meiping of this form, still with their covers, were discovered in the Wanli emperor's tomb, the Ding Ling. They were among the relatively few porcelains discovered there when the tomb was investigated'.
A similar vase is illustrated in The World's Great Collections, Oriental Ceramics, Vol. 8, Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, Kodansha 1982, pl. 246 ; another one was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2 May 2005, lot 646.
For similar large vases decorated with dragons, see He Li, Chinese Ceramics, The New Standard Guide, pl.428 ; and the meiping sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 2 May 1994, lot 641.
