CHURCHILL, Sir Winston L. S. (1874-1965). Autograph letter signed to Philip Morrell, 105 Mount Street, London, 22 June 1904, 2 pages, 8vo; envelope initialed.

Churchill explains his difficulty in both wishing to support Philip Morrell in his candidacy for South Oxfordshire, but not wanting to 'intrude into the arena of Oxfordshire controversial politics' or attack his opponent. 'Sir Robert Herman Hodge is a personal friend, & spoke several times in my support at a by election I once fought in Lancashire. He is a brother officer of mine in the Yeomanary & I do not feel that I could with any good heart attack his candidature'. Sir Robert Trotter Hermon-Hodge was MP for the constituency of south-eastern Oxfordshire from 1895 to 1906; Morrell from 1906 to 1910.
