In 1923 Ottoline Morrell stayed in the same German hotel as Gorky, and according to Robert Gathorne-Hardy, 'in spite of a language bar that was complete, she managed to meet him and somehow communicate her admiration' (Early Memoirs, p.39). The following year, when Siegfried Sassoon was at Garsington for Christmas, she lent him Gorky's memoirs, after which he wrote 'what he later called his first post-war poem with "my mature mode of utterance" or "cello voice"' (Max Egremont, Siegfried Sassoon, p.283).
