He first visited Garsington in 1915, taken by Desmond MacCarthy, and four years later he married Maria Nys, a Belgian refugee who had been living there. Gratitude was matched by suspicion, however. 'Lady Ottoline, Philip's wife,' he wrote to his father, 'is a quite incredible creature - arty beyond the dreams of avarice and a patroness of literature and the modernities. She is intelligent, but her affectation is overwhelming'. (Sybille Bedford, Aldous Huxley, vol. I, p.60). In 1921 Huxley offended his former hosts by satirizing them in Crome Yellow, which led to a breach in their friendship. Ottoline explained her objection in unusually political terms: 'Crome Yellow made a great deal of excitement and people, who were suspicious of us as Pacifists and employers of conscentious objectors, clapped their hands in glee and pointed out what a depraved, immoral life existed at Garsington. "After all", they said, "Huxley knows, for he lived there." But of these consequences Aldous was oblivious' (Ottoline at Garsington, p.218).
