RUSSELL, Bertrand (1872-1970). Philosophical Essays. London: Longmans, 1910. 8°. Original red cloth (stained). Some marginal pencil marking. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed 'O. from B.' and in her hand 'OM from BR April 1911 - Studland'. THIS WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST OF HIS OWN WORKS THAT RUSSELL GAVE TO LADY OTTOLINE.
Studland, near Swanage in Dorset, was a popular holiday place with the Bloomsbury Group (see Vanessa Bell: 'Studland Beach', Tate Gallery). In April 1911, Ottoline Morrell rented a house there where Bertrand Russell came to stay for three days (Seymour, pp.126-8). This was the intense height of their love affair and the occasion was very significant to Lady Ottoline.
