FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY FROM SASSOON TO HIS FRIEND THE POET AND MUSICOLOGIST TURNER, WITH TEXTUAL CORRECTIONS IN SASSOON'S HAND. Like Sassoon, Turner had been published in Marsh's Georgian Poetry series, and the two men had been friends since about early 1919 and Sassoon had lent Turner and his wife the money to buy 54 Tufton Street in Westminster, where Sassoon rented two rooms from 1920 to 1925. The seven manuscript corrections in pencil occur on six pages: p. 21 ('above' to 'along'); p. 24 ('Cross' to 'Gross'); p. 32 ('decorative' to 'mentionable' and 'stars and crosses' to 'decorations'); p. 33 ('sons' to 'wives'); p. 46 ('those' to 'lads'); p. 55 ('scarred' to 'scared'). Keynes notes that 1,500 copies of the first edition were printed. Keynes A17a.
