Lot Essay

In January 1883, the captain of the England team, Ivo Bligh, was presented with 'the Ashes' for defeating Australia in the three Test series. A month later the Victoria XI played and defeated Bligh's touring team on the 9/10/12th March by an innings and 73 runs. Thought by some to be the strongest Australian state team of all time, this Victoria XI included ten Test players.
