Lot Essay

The Place Vendome column, inspired by the column of Trajan in the Forum Rome, was constructed from the bronze of 1250 Russian and Austrian cannons captured after the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805. The present model is surmounted by the figure of Napoleon with bicorn hat, which replaced the previous model of Napoleon, as a Roman Emperor, during the Restauration.
