Lot Essay
In her 2006 catalogue of Sickert's paintings and drawings, Dr Wendy Baron comments on the present work, 'The figure cut off to the left is probably La Guiseppina. This painting recalls the fish still-lifes that Sickert had painted in Dieppe before he left for Venice in 1903, in particular a painting bought by Robert Emmons from the Savile Gallery in 1931 which was destroyed by fire in 1980'.
We are grateful to Wendy Baron, author of the monograph, Sickert Paintings and Drawings, (2006), for her assistance in preparing the catalogue entry for this lot and other lots by Walter Richard Sickert (lots 47, 48, 50, 52, 53 and 54).
