Lot Essay

Dr Wendy Baron notes that there are several versions of this subject, showing a climbing street in Le Pollet, the fishermen's quarter of Dieppe. 'The squaring of the largest canvas [the present work], evidence that the design has been transferred from another document, supports the suggestion that this is probably a later re-working (1914 or even 1919) of an early theme' (see W. Baron, loc. cit.).

Lady Stross, the previous owner of the picture suggested to Wendy Baron that Barnett Stross had probably bought the present work directly from Sickert in the 1930s.
