Lot Essay

The present composition has recently come to light, having been privately owned, out of the public eye for many decades. The grandfather of the present vendors was a friend of Sickert.

Dr Wendy Baron suggests that the composition may depict rue St Rémy, Dieppe. Michael Barker suggests that the location could be the corner of rue St Rémy and rue Aguado, facing the north side of the church of St Rémy or nearby, either way, it is believed to be in the quartier of St Rémy.

We are grateful to Dr Wendy Baron and to Michael Barker for their assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
