Lot Essay

In the late 1950s Piper was working on the commission for the stained glass window of the Baptistry at Coventry Cathedral and was drawn to France to develop his stained-glass-orientated colour vocabulary. From his sketchbooks around this date he produced chalk and watercolour drawings depicting local scenes in the small French towns and villages he visited.
