Lot Essay

Piper's watercolours of the 1950s brought together the strict abstraction of his early works and the direct topographical watercolours of the war years. The results are lively, spontaneous paintings, which whilst retaining the feeling for a place have a richness and intensity of colour.

The present view is the classic image of Bradford on Avon in Wiltshire showing the famous 13th Century packhorse bridge over the Avon.
