Lot Essay

In 1959-60 Piper travelled to Venice, completing many oils and watercolours. In Anthony West's book, John Piper (London, 1979) there are illustrations of four pages from a sketchbook entitled The Dogana from the Lagoon (nos. 168a-d) featuring images closely related to the present work. In 1965 he illustrated Venice by Adrian Stokes with 26 autolithographs showing views of the city.
