Lot Essay

Piper first visited Siena in 1921 with his family as a break after leaving school and before joining his father's firm of solicitors, and it was whilst on this trip that he realised his true vocation.

The present work, executed in 1947, depicts the famous sloping shell-shaped Piazza del Campo in the centre of Siena.
