Lot Essay

Lowry was quite intrigued by his Irish ancestry, often telling the story of how his great-grandfather Jacob, had moved from Belfast to Port Patrick in 1829 and, unable to find work, had eventually 'died of the drink'. With his friends Pat and Brian Cooke he took several holidays in Ireland, enjoying the eccentricity and hospitality of the Irish. The present work reflects the obvious enthusiasm the artist felt for the subject.
