Long was in the tent when General Patton exploded in fury (in two separate incidents) against Privates Charles H. Kuhl and Paul G. Bennet. Patton cursed them, slapped them, and even threatened to shoot Bennet himself. In a scathing report on the incidents which Long sent Eisenhower on 16 August 1943, the doctor wrote: "The deleterious effects of such incidents upon the well being of patients, upon the professional morale of hospital staffs, and upon the relationship of patient to physician are incalculable. It is imperative that immediate steps be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents."
