THE BITTERSWEET LIFE OF THE DISTANT FATHER. Einstein expresses delight at a letter from Eduard, 'It is often painful for me too to see you so little. But I have so many responsibilities and can rarely get away from here', adding also that in the difficult post-war conditions Switzerland is too expensive to visit; he looks forward however to a rare holiday with Eduard at Sigmaringen in October: 'The two of us have been so little together that I still hardly know you, although I am your father. You no doubt have a rather ill-defined idea of me as well. I shall take great care to change this for the future. Partly it is because you have been so ill'. He is pleased that Eduard is doing well at school, encouraging him however not to be too ambitious: 'It is no bad thing if others are better pupils than you'.
