EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Two autograph letters signed ('Albert' and 'Papa') to his first wife, Mileva, n.p., 'Samstag' and 29 June n.y., 2 pages, 8vo and 4to.
FEAR OF SCANDAL IF HE IS SEEN STAYING WITH HIS EX-WIFE. Einstein gladly accepts an invitation to stop in Zurich on his way back from a trip round northern Italy with Hans Albert, and would prefer to stay in Mileva's house when he is there, 'But I cannot do it because of the public scandal which would be connected with it. Even without this I am already too much talked about. I can easily stay in the pension nearby' -- the purpose of the stay would be to discuss Hans Albert's university plans; the Italian tour will include a visit to Einstein's sister Maja in Florence, who will be delighted to see Hans Albert after so long. In the 29 June letter Einstein gives details of his arrival, although it looks as if he will be obliged to go on to Geneva for a conference: 'These stupid meetings in Geneva always rob me of the most beautiful weeks of the year'; he should be able to go to Chamonix with Eduard, however.
