EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed and autograph postcard signed ('Papa') to his younger son, Eduard, Kaputh, n.d. and 11 July 1930, half page, 8vo, and one page, large 4to, the picture postcard with an image of Einstein's country house at Kaputh (two lines of text roughly excised from the letter, apparently in censorship).
EDUARD'S APHORISMS: both missives react with pleasure to two series of 'aphorisms' sent by Eduard, and in the letter Einstein comments in detail on individual aphorisms, finding some 'especially deep', highlighting verbal or practical inconsistencies in others, observing of the whole series 'I think you have translated them from the French. If they are your own, I would consider you a real talent', and ending with an aphorism of his own father's who, 'when it was pointed out to him that he smoked bad cigars, said 'Anyone can smoke a good one ...' As for his own work, he is 'advancing only slowly with my theory in company with my Dr Mayer. I still do not know if it is right, but even small steps forward give me pleasure'. (2)
