WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900). Autograph letter signed ('Oscar Wilde') to [his publisher John] Lane, Babbacombe Cliffe, n.d. [February 1893], 8 pages, 8vo, on bifolia (minor soiling).
THE IMMINENT PUBLICATION OF SALOMé AND THE SPHINX. 'I expect Salome will be ready in a fortnight ... I am printing 50 on large paper -- of which you can have 25 if you like -- they will be 10/_ each, sale price', asking Lane write him at once a 'formal note about the whole thing -- so as to have no misunderstanding'; he complains that 'a large number' of [the reissued fifth edition of] his Poems are still unpaid for, and requests a cheque, referring also to John Gray's Silverpoints (which was being published at Wilde's expense), asking for news of the publication date of The Sphinx, and hoping to see Lane if he comes to Torquay.
Salomé was published (in French) in a joint edition by Lane and the Libraire de l'Art Indépendant on 22 February 1893; The Sphinx, by Lane alone, not until 1894. Lane was also to publish Lady Windermere's Fan and A Woman of No Importance.
