Type: 3:110aG (text), 4:160G (headings and headlines). 3- to 6-line initials, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, opening 14-line initial supplied later. (Occasional light browning, heavier in sheet 4/5.6, some small stains.) 18th-century German panelled red morocco gilt, edges gilt and gauffered (lightly worn at extremities, a few scratches). Provenance: Neustadt, monastery of St. Paul the Hermit (late 17th-century inscription) -- [Michael Wodhull (purchase note dated Nov. 23 1796 in his hand at end; acquired by:) -- J.E. First edition of the longer version of this popular collection of the lives of the desert fathers, including saying and exhortations ascribed to them. It was preceded by shorter versions printed at Caselle, Brussels and Cologne. The discolouration in sheet 4/5.6 may have been caused by displaying the volume open at the life of St. Paul the Hermit, after whom the monastery who owned the volume in the 17th century was named.
