SELIGMANN, Johann Michael (1720-1762). Verzameling van Uitlandsche en Zeldzaame Vogelen...in't Nedertuitsch vertaald... door M. Houttuyn. Amsterdam: Jan Christiaan Sepp, 1772-81.

9 parts in 5 volumes, 2° (445 x 265mm). 473 hand-coloured full-page plates by Seligmann after Edwards and Catesby. (Very slight occasional spotting, plate 74 in vol.1 bound upside down.) Uncut in contemporary Dutch half-calf over mottled boards, spines with raised bands and lettering-pieces (some rubbing, bumped at extremities). Provenance: P. v. E. (stamp on front endpapers) -- Count Clemens Platen-Hallermund (booklabel).

A FINE, UNCUT COPY OF THE FIRST, LIMITED DUTCH EDITION, which includes c.50 more plates than the earlier German and French editions. The plates are from Huth's German edition of George Edwards's A Natural History of Uncommon Birds and Gleanings of Natural History, with Mark Catesby's The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. They were re-engraved by Seligmann for the German edition and reprinted here, keeping their German title together with Latin and French. A number of these new plates are enriched by flora and scenic backgrounds not in the originals. Besides birds painted in fresh colours, the attractive plates also figure picturesque apes, snakes, fishes, zebras etc. and 'had the curious effect that exotic species were often better known than native European birds' (Jackson). They are accompanied by explanatory leaves in Dutch. The first volume includes a list of 90 subscribers, suggesting that less than 150 copies were printed, even though some subscribers may have ordered more than one copy. Jackson Dictionary of Bird Artists p.431; Landwehr 180; Nissen IVB 859; Zimmer p.200.
