THIRD ENGLISH EDITION, ONE OF C.50-60 EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED COPIES BOUND UP FOR CAPE EMPLOYEES. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY JONATHAN CAPE. According to the accompanying letter from G. Wren Howard (Cape's founding partner), this is one of 'about 50' which were extra-illustrated with the four colour plates from the limited issue and 'two out of the three facsimiles which also appeared in the limited edition' (in fact, this copy has only one facsimile; it is possible that the quantities of the two facsimiles used differed or that one was accidentally omitted from this copy). These copies were made up for presentation to members of Cape's staff as a memento, as G. Wren Howard states in his letter informing Fowler that the volume has been sent: 'I thought you would like to have something to remind you of a unique event in the history of publishing with which you have been so closely associated'. The number of these copies is not certain, but probably lies between the 50 stated here and the 60 noted in the West-Bodleian copy. Cf. O'Brien A041 ('This issue is reported to have been ... bound and issued in a small number (approximately 60) to members of the firm May 1935').
