Romanée-Conti
Côte de Nuits, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

"Medium ruby color. Initially, this is aromatically tight and closed but after 2 hours in the glass, it absolutely explodes from the glass with a breathtaking panoply of Asian spices, exotic fruit aromas and a touch of earth followed by rich, lush, almost opulent flavors that melt in the mouth and coat the palate with a layer of velvet on the fantastically long finish. This is a dramatic wine in every sense of the word yet it's not at all showy but rather discreet and understated. I particularly like the sense of inner power and purity of expression and this is as good a wine as I ever hope to drink. It should last for another 50 years and if you ever have the chance, don't miss it! Consistent notes."

"Vibrant, pure, spicy and concentrated to the point of almost painful intensity with its super ripe, palate staining flavors yet this remains regal, almost aloof and quite reserved. The focus in unbelievable and while it's hard to speak of subtle power, one can sense the vibrancy and depths of reserve that are only hinted at now. This is every bit as good as the La Tâche but a completely different expression. It is also the longest of any of these wines and the finish lasts literally for minutes; I could still taste it the next day. Between this and the La Tâche, I could only shake my head in awe."

"Young Romanée-Conti is rarely expressive yet this is as aromatically expressive as the Echézeaux with a gentle touch of wood framing stunningly spicy dark cherry and plum aromas that pull you into the wine with its seductive grace and purity followed by sweet, understated and vibrant medium full flavors that display the best acid/fruit balance of any wine here. This is dense, forceful and long with perhaps more sheer size and muscle than is typical yet the purity of expression and astonishing length is something to behold. But ultimately, just like the La Tâche, what sets this apart from all the others is not its power, not its richness and not its complexity but rather its completeness. There is a serenity here that cannot be duplicated and must be experienced to really be believed. A great wine by any measure and one that will also be capable of aging with poise for decades."
