ESSENTIAL MODERN BORDEAUX MAGNUM SUPERLOT
Château Lafite Rothschild--Vintage 1982
Level: into neckmagnum (1)
"Most recently still impressively deep and comparatively youthful; a well developed, sweet and harmonious bouquet. Mouthfilling, so much on show, so much left to show. last noted at the Reservere Tasting of '82 Pauillacs, April 2001 ****(*) Another effortless 20 years? MB, Vintage Wine
Château Latour--Vintage 1982
Level: bottom neck; wrinkled labelmagnum (1)
"most recently, emitting 'warm, ripe, cedary and redcurrant scents. Surprisingly sweet, very amenable despite its tannic grip. Delicious. Last noted at the La Réserve tasting, April 2001 ***(**) Twenty glorious years ahead." MB, Vintage Wine
Château Mouton Rothschild--Vintage 1982
Level: bottom neck; bin soiled and tissue stained labelmagnum (1) "Cassis, cedar, spice box, minerals, and vanillin are all present, but this opaque black/purple Pauillac has yet to reveal secondary nuances given its youthfulness. It exhibits huge tannin, unreal levels of glycerin and concentration, and spectacular sweetness and opulence. Nevertheless, it demands another decade of cellaring, and should age effortlessly for another seven or eight decades." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, #129 (June 2000)
Château Cheval Blanc--Vintage 1982
Level: bottom neckmagnum (1)
"A gorgeously sweet entry displays flavors of caramel, roasted coffee, jammy red and black fruits, coconut, and smoke. It is fat and full-bodied, with considerable tannin, structure, and muscle in the finish." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #129 (Jun 2000)
Château Mouton Rothschild--Vintage 1986
Level: bottom neck; wrinkled labelmagnum (1)
Very deep purple, with youthfully vibrant cassis, resin and minty aromas. This is a solidly-built, four-square, spectacular wine with a powerful, vanilla-oak element which will require, I surmised, until 2003 to integrate, and for its abundant tannins to soften. A.H. Last tasted Jan 1998
Château Haut Brion--Vintage 1989magnum (1)
"The prodigious 1989 Haut-Brion is one of the greatest first-growths I have ever tasted. It has always reminded me of what the 1959 must have tasted like in its youth, but it is even richer and more compelling aromatically. " Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #109 (Feb 1997)
Château La Mission Haut Brion--Vintage 1989magnum (1)
"The wine is extremely full-bodied, unctuously-textured, sweet, jammy, and rich. Although it is still a youthful, unformed wine, it is already delicious to drink. It should develop additional bottle bouquet by the turn of the century, after which it will drink well for 15-20 years. Last tasted 11/96" Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd ed. (1998)
Château Clinet--Vintage 1989magnum (1)
More recently, deep, medium intensity, unusual, distinctive flavour, hefty, rich. Last tasted September 1998. *(**) MB Vintage Wine.
Château Latour--Vintage 1990
Wrinkled labelmagnum (1)
"Most recently, also alongside all the first growths, I noted it as having wonderful depth and resonance; a classic, cedary Pauillac nose: some ripe sweetness, full flavoured, leathery, tannic texture, good length and dry finish. Last noted at the Penning- Rowsells', June 2000 ****(*) Not a long-lasting'28 but a long haul, well balanced wine, say 2010-2030." MB,Vintage Wine
Château Margaux--Vintage 1990magnum (1)
"Five months later, at Manfred Wagner's vertical in Zurich: rich, biscuity nose, great depth; sweet, fleshy, full of fruit, excellent length. I rated the '89 fractionally higher. But the '90 was very good indeed and approaching cruising altitude. Last tasted Nov 2000 ***-****(*) 2010-2025." MB, Vintage Wine
Château Angélus--Vintage 1990magnum (1)
"The 1990 is softer than the 1989 (because of the vintage's greater ripeness), as well as lower in acidity, giving it a marginally more forward and flattering set of aromatics and flavors. However, the impression is one of a big, beefy, thick, super-rich wine offering that tell-tale L'Angelus nose of smoky vanillin oak, olives, jammy cassis, and spice." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #109 (Feb 1997)
Château La Conseillante--Vintage 1990magnum (1)
"Now this is my type of wine. Of course, in this vintage, opaque in cask but harmonious and classy still very deep; a huge, rich, fleshy mouthful, sweet, balanced. Last noted dining at Ch de Malle, March 1999 **** Now-2015." MB, Vintage Wine
