A REMARKABLE ORIGINAL WOODEN CASE OF MONTRACHET 1978 FROM DOMAINE DE LA ROMANEE-CONTI

MONTRACHET, DRC

Montrachet has an ideal southeast exposure for Chardonnay grapes to ripen perfectly on Mont Rachet or the bald mountain. The calcareous soil with a limestone base which provides good drainage along with mineral contact are some of the intangibles that makes it arguably the greatest dry white wine in the world and the platonic form of white Burgundy at its most opulent. Historically, Montrachet ranks among the world's most expensive dry white wines and Domaine de la Romanee Conti's tiny production under 300 cases per year laurels among the most precious. As the property of just under one hectare is on the Chassagne side of the vineyard, DRC's Montrachet brings forth fullness rather than the mineral aspect found in Puligny vines. The Domaine's Montrachet has phenomenal richness and concentration with white flowers, green apples, honey, liquefied minerals and smoked nuts. Harnessing the wines' full bore explosiveness, there is definition and balance to the wine's depth and length.

Montrachet--Vintage 1978
Côte de Beaune, Domaine de la Romanée Conti
Levels: four 2.5cm, six 3.5cm and two 4.5cm; lightly corroded capsules, consecutive numbered bottles, packed in straw
In original wooden case
Production: 2735 bottles (approx 227 dozen, 9 barrels)
The 1978 crop was smaler than average due to the cold and wet spring weather during flowering. The vintage was ameliorated by warm weather in August and September. The 1978 whites needed time in bottle due to their naturally low acidity, but have evolved with great elegance.
