LE PIN
Le Pin recreated itself as the most hedonistic Pomerol and a competitor to Petrus when it was acquired by the Thienpont family, long time owners of Vieux-Château-Certan. They completed refashioned the nearly defunct property, greatly reducing yields and speeding up and controlling the fermentations as well as macerations. Le Pin sits ideally in the highest aspect of Pomerol with iron rich gravel soils. The expressive and exotic character of Le Pin is heightened in the winery through the unusual practice (for Bordeaux) of using new oak casks for the malolactic fermentation of the wine. This is extremely labor intensive and can be only done on small estates such as Le Pin where the production is scant 600 cases. The results are a massive oaky wine of incredible richness yet creamy butter smoothness.

Le Pin--Vintage 1987
Pomerol
Very bin soiled label, cracked wax capsule
In original wooden case
"A big, exotic, perfumed, smoky, oaky bouquet is at first forceful and unrestrained. However, as the wine sits in the glass, the ripe, red fruit character emerges and is followed by a wonderfully lush, flattering, precocious wine that should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. It is absolutely delicious--another notable success for the 1987 vintage in Pomerol. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 11/90." Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition (1998)
