Two engravings recording the Emperor Qianlong's military campaigns in Formosa, 1787-1788
from a set of eighteen, after designs by the Court artists Kia Ts'tiuan and Li Ming, one depicting soldiers on foot and on horseback, overcoming the enemy on the banks of a river, numerous soldiers firing guns from floating rafts, other soldiers charging across a wooden bridge, framed and glazed; the other of a Palace scene, with the Emperor seated on a terrace overseeing numerous troops kneeling before him, each scene below a poem dated 1789, each engraving - 34¼in. x 19¾in. (87cm. x 50.2cm.).

This large format style of engraving was initially used in France for the Emperor Qianlong's first military campaign engravings commissioned in 1765.
