Lot Essay

The sideboard-table legs' voluted truss pilasters reflect the George II Roman fashion of the 1730s popularised by J. Vardy's Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent, 1744. Similar reed-enriched legs feature on a sideboard-table that formed part of the antique furnishings of Heathfield Park, Sussex assembled in the mid-20th century by Captain Derek Joseph Barrington Fitzgerald and his wife Violet, née Sassoon (acquired in 1964 by The Huntington Art Collections, San Marino, California). Mrs Derek Fitzgerald's collection was sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, London, 5 July 1963 however, the table in the Huntington Collections has not been traced.
