George Doveston is recorded as a cabinet-maker from 1832 and his business was continued under a number of different headings throughout the nineteenth century. The business operated under the name of Doveston, Bird & Hull, circa 1860-1881. Unfortunately, the records for this firm have not been traced, but they produced furniture of the highest quality. Their leading designer was Bruce Talbert, before he moved to Gillows and then Alfred Waterhouse when they were involved in the furnishing of Manchester Town Hall.
