Lot Essay

Edward Whymper was a wood-engraver and alpinist and led the first team of climbers to ascend the Matterhorn in 1865 in which four members of the party died on the descent (one view of the Matterhorn is included here). He undertook later expeditions to Greenland, the Rockies and South America and through his observation there made important improvements to the barometer.
