Lot Essay

These 'monobloc' CinemaScope lenses were used by Jack Hildyard to create his Oscar-winning cinematography for the 1957 production, The Bridge on the River Kwai, directed by David Lean. The monobloc design was an improvement on the use of supplementary anamorphics with prime lenses as it eliminated the need for two focus pullers. The design was itself superceded by the development of Panavision lenses which were virtually distortion-free.
