HUES, Robert (1553?-1632). Tractatus de globis, caelesti et terrestri, ac eorum vsus, London: [Heidelberg, G. Vögelin], Londini, in officina Nortoniana, 1611. 12°. Woodcut illustration on title, folding printed table, with the final blank (worming in the lower margins at beginning and end, severe at end, a few small wormholes in the text from D10 to the end, several margins, and the fore-margin of the folding table, frayed with slight loss, staining and browning). Contemporary English calf, compartments of spine and sides panelled in blind, title and date in gilt on spine (head and foot of spine and corners worn). Provenance: From the Library of John Jackson (1793-1875) of Academy Place, Warrington (bookplate).
The scarce second edition of this treatise on globes by the talented mathematician and geographer Robert Hues, scientific advisor to Thomas Cavendish with whom he sailed at least once round the world, tutor to the Wizard Earl of Northumberland's son, and friend of George Chapman who mentioned him in the preface to his translation of Homer as one of the learned and valued friends to whose advice he was indebted.
